HI, I’M AMY RENEE’ ROBERTS.

Why am I passionate about dance?

As a child, I was extremely shy. I also was bullied throughout my pre-teen years about my looks and my quiet, reserved demeanor. I began ballet when I was five. It became my saving grace. In the studio, on the stage, or in costume, I could communicate my emotions without words. I found a community to which I belonged. I felt confident, and eventually, beautiful.

I began teaching dance at age 15, and continued for many years before I became an elementary principal.

As a public school teacher and administrator, I also integrated dance into my classroom, and found ways to incorporate dance at my buildings. It has always been a way to connect with students, to help those who might struggle with academics, self-image, or social relationships.

Through my years of teaching, coaching, and leading, it has always been my mission to instill the values of self-worth, acceptance, and confidence in my students. Students are my passion, and dance is my gift to them.

For those who want to dance, my philosophy is that it should be STRUCTURED yet FUN! Because I have 40+ years of dance experience, 30+ years of dance teaching/ coaching, and 24 years of public school education experience with a Master of Arts degree in Administration and Special Education, I am able to integrate research-based best practices for learning into our dance lessons. You can ask the students… we have “serious” time, and “silly” time!

CLASS STRUCTURE

The way dance classes are run is key to learning, progressing, and keeping behaviors in check. All classes begin with body warm-ups, followed by barre and/or skill practice, and then choreography and dance time. Students learn through music, rhythm, patterns, and how to have fun doing it!

SKILLS AND STEPS

Students learn foundational skills pertinent to the type of dance they are focused on. Skills are taught in a progressional curriculum, with the basic technique mastered first before moving on to more complex movement. Students are assessed on these skills and combinations and given positive feedback for what is going well, and things to work on to achieve improvement.
